CVSA International Roadcheck: What Every CDL Driver Should Know
Every year, commercial drivers across North America prepare for one of the industry’s largest safety initiatives:
CVSA International Roadcheck.
Whether you’re a seasoned professional or new to trucking, understanding what inspectors look for can help you stay prepared, avoid violations, and keep freight moving safely.
What Is the CVSA International Roadcheck?
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) International Roadcheck is a 72-hour enforcement initiative conducted throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
During the event, certified inspectors perform thousands of roadside inspections on commercial motor vehicles and drivers. While inspections happen year-round, Roadcheck places an increased focus on ensuring drivers and equipment meet federal safety regulations.
The most common inspection performed is the North American Standard Level I Inspection, a comprehensive 37-step inspection that examines both the driver and the vehicle.
What Does a Level I Inspection Include?
During a Level I inspection, officers evaluate both driver qualifications and vehicle condition.
Driver Inspection
Inspectors typically review:
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
- Medical Examiner’s Certificate (when required)
- Hours of Service (HOS)
- Record of Duty Status
- Seat belt usage
- Signs of impairment or fatigue
Vehicle Inspection
Inspectors also examine critical safety components, including:
- Brake system
- Tires and wheels
- Steering components
- Suspension
- Lights and reflectors
- Windshield wipers
- Mirrors
- Frame and coupling devices
- Fuel and exhaust systems
- Cargo securement
Any serious violations could result in the vehicle being placed Out of Service until repairs are completed.
How Drivers Can Prepare
The best way to succeed during Roadcheck is by making safety a daily habit—not just something to think about during inspection week.
A few simple reminders include:
- Perform a thorough pre-trip inspection every day.
- Address maintenance concerns immediately.
- Keep required documentation current and organized.
- Maintain accurate Hours of Service records.
- Wear your seat belt at all times.
- Never ignore warning lights or equipment issues.
Preparation starts long before an inspection begins.
